Daelim Completes Installation of Cables
for Dandeung Bridge Connecting Gogunsan Archipelago

Daelim completed on February 23, 2014 the installation of major cables for Dandeung Bridge in section 2 of the Gogunsan Archipelago Connecting Road construction project. The section 2 construction site is a project involving the installation of marine bridges (three marine bridges) with total length of 1,292m connecting Shinsi Island and Munyeo Island in Okdo-myeon, Gunsan-si, Jeonbuk.

Of those bridges, Dandeung Bridge is the first 1-tower, 1-span, earth-anchored suspension bridge in Korea. With major span length of 400m, the bridge boasts of the longest span length among the current 1-tower suspension bridges in the world. The tower is a ferroconcrete one with height of 105m and is in good harmony with the surrounding landscape since its shape resembles a sailboat’s sail.

The air spinning construction method applied to Lee Sun-Shin Bridge and Suspension Bridge between Jeokgeum and Yeongnam was employed for the cable construction. Using the same principle as ski lift in a ski field, the air spinning construction method features a wheel-shaped pulley plying between anchorages and twisting thin wires with cable. A total of 1,079 tons of high-strength steel wires with diameter of 5.53mm were inputted into the installation.
