DL E&C said on the 15th that the company won the KTA Tunneling Award from the Korean Tunneling and Underground Space Association (KTUSA) with the Hinterland Complex Shaping Project of the North Container Phase 2 of Busan New Port. DL E&C won the innovative underground space use sector prize jointly with design company Soosung Engineering and technical adviser KICT.

The award ceremony was held at aT Center in Yangjae-dong, Seocho-gu, Seoul, where the 2022 spring academic forum of the KTUSA was held on the 14th. The KTUSA is hosting the award ceremony every year by selecting excellent construction projects and innovative technologies in the tunnel and underground space sector in Korea for the past three years.
The project involves safely removing Mt. Yokmangsan in Changwon, Gyeongnam and shape hinterland with size of 522,00㎡, or equivalent to 75 football stadiums. The stones generated at the site are used for the construction of the new port.

The KTUSA rated the project as an innovative example that can innovatively use underground spaces through various construction methods and technologies. DL E&C suggested a method of using underground spaces as high-value facilities such as data center, shopping center, and smart farm. The company secured green spaces by shaping a large-scale park with size of 85,000㎡.

DL E&C predicted that there will be demand for stones up to 9,140,000㎥ annually by analyzing the Busan New Port and Jinhae New Port projects whose orders are expected to be placed. In consideration of this, the company designed an underground factory and system that can produce stones with size of 10,400,00㎥ annually.

The stone factory is planned to be built as an unmanned and automated one by integrating AI and ICT technologies. A machine guidance is applied to the boring machine excavating stones, and a drone is monitoring the work site in real time. Through big data analysis, equipment, quality, and environmental management can be carried out in real time. Through this, site safety is expected to be managed with high priority.

“We boldly adopted various smart construction methods for innovative underground spaces. We plan to build a smart factory consisting of AI and ICT technologies in terms of the monitoring, management, and control system,” an official of DL E&C explained.
