Sungai Brunei Bridge Opens

Sungai Brunei Bridge, the first cable stayed bridge in Brunei built by Daelim,
was opened on October 14

The opening ceremony of Sungai Brunei Bridge, Brunei’s first cable stayed bridge built by Daelim, was held in Brunei’s capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, together with the event for the 50th anniversary of the Brunei king’s accession. Hassanil Bolkiah, King of Brunei, and Daelim vice president Yun Tae-seop along with construction workers and local residents attended the ceremony.

The bridge is the first cable stayed bridge built on Brunei River, which corresponds to Korea’s Han River. As such, the local people’s religion and culture were reflected on the bridge in line with such symbolism. The top part of the main tower was designed as an Islamic traditional dome style symbolizing Brunei’s state religion, Islam. The lower part of the main tower was designed with a crescent shape — the pattern of Brunei’s flag — and an Islamic prayer room was installed in consideration of the religious feature. The main tower’s height was 157m, which is the same as the English writing style for July 15. It was recorded as the highest construction structure in Brunei.

Sungai Brunei Bridge is a cable stayed bridge with one main tower. The bridge has four lanes; it is 712m long, and the distance between towers is 300m. The bridge connects Lumapas and Jalan Residency, the parts of Bandar Seri Begawan (capital city) divided by Brunei River. The travel distance between the two regions used to be 40km, since vehicles and people had to go from one part to the other part along Brunei River; now, however, the travel distance between the two parts has been sharply reduced to 712m.
