DL E&C announced on the 30th that it has placed and operated ‘urban apiaries’ at the construction sites in Korea to restore the ecosystem of bees, which have recently been suffering from a sharp decline in population. DL E&C is the first construction company in Korea that sets up urban apiaries at the construction sites to preserve biodiversity.

Bees are insects that are vital to human survival. Over 70% of the top 100 crops, which account for 90% of the world’s food supply, are produced from bee pollination. However, bee populations have been plummeting around the world, putting the ecosystem in serious danger, due to global warming, pesticide population and urbanization.

In May, DL E&C placed and operated urban apiaries at the construction sites in the Seoul metropolitan area to participate in activities for restoring the bee ecosystem. The on-site workers donned beekeeping hats and working clothes, and regularly checked the honeycomb inside the beehive. They sprayed pesticides every day to prevent mites from infesting the beehive, as well as diligently managed them, such as watching CCTV and rushing to catch wasps when they appeared.

In particular, DL E&C created a character of a queen bee, “Bongsuni’, to encourage all on-site workers to participate in environmental protection activities. This friendly character ‘Bongsuni’ was attached to the waste treatment center, recycling center and wheel wash station to request “Please, actively participate in environmental protection activities to protect Bongsuni.”

After operating the urban apiaries for about 4 months, DL E&C’s on-site workers collected about 11kg of natural honey early this month. The honey collected in this way was made into refreshing honey water and distributed for the health of the on-site workers who are enduring the heat of the midsummer.

The on-site employee responsible for managing the urban apiaries said, “At first, I wondered if the bees would be able to thrive at the construction site, but seeing the colony grow faster than expected made me marvel at the wonders of nature. It was an opportunity for me to resolve to manage the site more thoroughly in the future in order to protect not only the bees but also various natural ecosystem.

DL E&C has been consistently carrying out ‘Sharing the Cleanness” to protect the environment, as part of its ESG (Environment, Society and Governance) management.

First of all, the employees at the head office participate in the ‘Campaign for the Reduction of Carbon Footprint’ in partnership with Jongno-gu Office, in order to implement guidelines for reducing carbon in daily life. The Company is also carrying out a company-wide ‘Zero Paper Cup Activity’, aiming to reduce about 620,000 disposable items annually. The Company is also in the process of converting all corporate vehicles to electric vehicles by 2030. This year, the Company has launched a new campaign where employees grow seedlings in their offices and homes, and deliver them to forests.

At the sites across the country, including the head office, the Company regularly collaborates with local governments to conduct activities ‘Clean up! 1 mountain, 1 stream, 1 street” to clean up surrounding environment. In particular, about 100 employees voluntarily visit the Saetgang Ecological Park in Yeouido, Seoul to protect otter habitat and to clean up the park.

DL E&C has a plan to actively review the expansion of the urban apiaries to the other sites which was first piloted at the construction site this year.

An official from DL E&C said, “Environmental protection and ecosystem preservation are essential for cooperate sustainability. We will continue to strive to strengthen our ESG management in order to fulfill our corporate social responsibility.
