“Reduced kitchen hood noise to library level.”
DL E&C won the Jang Young-Shil Award for ‘D-Silent Hood’.

‘D-Silent Hood’, a kitchen hood co-developed by DL E&C and HIMPEL

- Developed differential technology to reduce noise dramatically, and strengthened suction power in various environments
- Sales in last year reached close to 20,000 units, and DL E&C plans to expand its customers, including B2C, in the second half of this year
- “Continuing efforts to solve social issues based on win-win cooperation between large and small companies”

DL E&C announced on the 24th that ‘D-Silent Hood’, a kitchen hood co-developed with HIMPEL, a company specialized in environmental home appliances, won the Jang Young-Shil Award. The Jang Young-Shil Award, named after Jang Young-Shil, a scientist during the Joseon Dynasty, is hosted by the Ministry of Science & ICT, to discover and award outstanding research achievements of companies.

▣ Dramatically reduces hood noise while increasing suction power
‘D-Silent Hood’ is a product that dramatically reduces noise, compared to conventional kitchen hoods. DL E&C developed and utilized a low-noise fan and a fan case with excellent soundproofing to solve the root causes of noise.

Notably, a patented technology utilizing an ‘In Line Structure’ was developed and applied to reduce air resistance for the first time in the industry. In the conventional products, the direction of the fan and pipes was bent at 90 degrees, causing smoke to hit the pipes multiple times and to amplify the noise. ‘D-Silent Hood’ adopts an ‘In Line Structure’ that aligns in a straight line the fan’s position and the direction from which smoke comes in, greatly reducing noise.

The actual operating noise of this product ranges from 30 to 52dB, more than 20dB lower than conventional products. The noise generated when operating the hood at the lowest level is only at the library level (32dB).

DL E&C and HIMPEL have dramatically reduced the hood’s noise while greatly enhancing its suction power. They developed ‘technology for constant air volume’ that can maintain constant suction power in various kitchen environments after deriving the optimal air volume suitable for domestic residential culture. This technology powerfully sucks up heat, odor, gas and fine dust generated when cooking food.

‘D-Silent Hood’ adopts a function of ‘Post Purge’ that completely discharges harmful gas and oil vapor remaining in the surrounding area for 30 seconds even after the power is turned off. This function operates at such a low noise level that users are hardly aware of it, effectively sucking up and discharging residual pollutants from the kitchen.

About 19,000 units of  D-Silent Hoods were sold last year, mainly via business-to-business (B2B) transactions. It is being installed in DL E&C’s ‘e-Pyeonhansesang’ apartments. This year, it is expected to be expanded to business-to-customer (B2C) transactions, and sales are anticipated to be increased by more than 60%, compared to the previous year.

▣ Win-win cooperation between large and small companies will solve social problems: “Continued development of new technologies”
‘D-Silent Hood’ is cited as a model case of win-win cooperation between large and small companies to solve social problems. Conventional kitchen hood has been pointed out as one of the causes for lung cancer in housewives due to its inability to efficiently discharge harmful gases. Additionally, there were many complaints from users due to the high noise generated during the hood’s operation process, which reduces the frequency of use.

Accordingly, DL E&C and HIMPEL closely collaborated throughout the entire commercialization process from setting development goals to preliminary research, development, performance verification and certification, and then created ‘D-Silent Hood’. The two companies have maintained a cooperative relationship from co-development of technology since 2015.

In addition to HIMPEL, DL E&C strives to develop various new technologies in collaboration with its partners, including the recent development of ‘fire suppression system of electric vehicle for building’ with Tank Tech, a SMB specialized in ship equipment located in Busan.

An official from DL E&C said, “The innovative and differentiated technology of ‘D-Silent Hood’ was recognized, and won the Jang Young-Shil Award. We will continue to make efforts to solve social problems based on win-win cooperation with small and medium-sized businesses.”
